"Crossing into Hong Kong also brought another surprise: the cars. Shiny new Japanese and German cars everywhere—Lexus, Nissan, Toyota, BMW, Mercedes-Benz."
Among HKers, Chinese cars don't yet have the same cachet as Japanese and German brands, though that will likely change over time.
Line ups at Holiland? I thought they’ve retreated to third & fourth tier cities ages ago (or least the far flung ‘burbs). At least show the now ubiquitous Bread Talk shops or even the upcoming Paper Stone lux bakeries instead.
Great article. I missed my opportunity to visit Shenzhen the last time I was in Hong Kong. It is on my to-do list for the next trip.

First visited Shenzhen around 2002. Later lived there for 3 years and often go back. An amazing city.
Yes indeed! Love it every time I go there.
speaking of eating in shenzhen, recommend a small restaurant that features omakase with chinese characteristic: 活締·魚市刺身 (蓝漪花园店) 南山区蛇口蛇口老街51-16号
all fish served are sourced in china. owner is an interesting guy.
Will try next time
Very good article, thank you!
I miss shenzhen so much!! A must visit (or stay-stint) if possible

Yes, I do have bank accounts in the mainland. But I need one in Hong Kong—not for the faint of heart.
